"Invite Children to Make Their Marks" with Kids Glass More

New York Times Features Kids Glass

The New York Times' Home and Garden department featured Skyline's Kids Glass Animals pattern in its print and online journal July 13.

Stephen Milioti writes that the multicolored glass patterns "invite children to make their marks" with regular markers on brightly patterned glass surfaces:

"Kids Glass from Skyline Design consists of clear panels of safety glass with patterns printed on the back. Children (or adults) can draw on it in regular marker, which cleans up easily with window cleaner or a chalkboard eraser.

Originally designed to provide a homelike atmosphere for children in health-care and other unfamiliar settings, it can be mounted on walls, used as a room divider or placed on a tabletop. There are 11 patterns, including Animals, above, which has bright multicolored animal silhouettes, and Handwriting, which features dotted lines similar to the ones used in penmanship instruction. All patterns come on 1/4-inch-thick, recyclable tempered glass. Sizes are custom, but a typical panel is 3 feet wide by 7 feet high (about $1,500), and groupings of panels can be installed on one wall."

New Kids Glass

Kids Glass
Skyline Design’s newest glass collection features 11 patterns with fun and engaging graphics for children and adults. Kids Glass combines color and imagination to address the need for positive distraction within children’s healthcare, educational, library, and museum environments.

The whimsical Kids Glass collection encourages interactivity and creative play: Try on different hair styles by peeking though artwork on eco-etch® translucent glass panels; complete a maze, connect the dots, or draw a picture with markers on the front side of Skyline’s back-painted Vitracolor® glass.

Kids Glass is fabricated on low iron PPG Starphire® tempered glass in all standard glass sizes up to 72˝ x 144˝. Etched patterns are created with Skyline’s proprietary eco-etch process to acheive the look, feel and maintenance benefits of imported Acid Etch Glass without the environmental concerns and costly transportation. Graphic patterns are created using Skyline’s low-VOC, water-based Vitracolor paint coatings in keeping with our ethos of sustainability.

The easily cleaned, durable glass surface is ideal for children's environments. Applications include feature walls, signage, furniture, wall partitions, and magnetic and marker boards for health care, corporate day care, education and retail environments.

Designed for Skyline by Thesis, Noël Ashby and Deborah Newmark. Made in Chicago.

"Skyline Design has always been a big supporter of the planet. Glass is without question the most environmentally sound material in the building industry, allowing warm health-promoting sunlight in while keeping undesirable elements out. The possibilities of design are endless, giving architects and glazers an incredible tool to create beautiful structures that are environmental functional and cost effective.

At Skyline, all of our scrap glass is recycled, and we strive for thoughtful examination of our design, production and manufacturing practices as well as our sampling and disposal processes. The Skyline message is mindfully passed on to our A&D and Glazing communities. In the past 26 years, what we have seen from our client base is increased public awareness, knowledge and support, as well as partnership regarding environmental responsibility. LEED has certainly helped with this, as well as increased news, publication and organization regarding industry responsibility and of course, the current economic/resource concerns. Regardless of the drivers, the message has certainly gotten out there, and as a glass community, we should continue to spread the word. For our glazing community, the glaziers are the link between the manufacturer and the client; and I have great hopes that the environmental momentum not only will, but should continue."

A Collection In Whites, Suzanne Tick Glass

Skyline Design in Chicago is pleased to announce the introduction of a new collection, Suzanne Tick Glass™ for Skyline Design. This fresh architectural collection of 10 patterns represents the first ever collaboration between the award winning textile designer Suzanne Tick and the well known decorative glass manufacturer Skyline Design. “A Collection in Whites”, including taupes and black evolved using the eco-etch™ and AST™ techniques introduced to Suzanne by Deborah Newmark, Creative Director. “I wanted this glass collection to read soft like a textile yet architectural, where it will be housed”. The inspiration for her first foray into the world of glass is based on the various degrees of translucency the medium exhibits and the numerous techniques that Skyline offered her as a designer. Implemented textile weaves structures and motif scale studies were developed into patterns that are etched on glass. The patterns are enhanced by the translucent qualities of glass thereby pushing the boundaries between textiles and building material. The glass takes on a greater visual and tactile dimension, transcending its hard surface. The combination is the best of both worlds, the durability, permanence and easy maintenance of glass and the fluid tactile quality of a textile. Applications include sidelights, door lights, feature walls, signage and horizontal surfaces. The collection comes in standard glass sizes (up to 56” x124”) and thicknesses, and meets all glass safety requirements. Options are tempered, laminated or clear plate glass. Suzanne Tick Glass™ combines her love of texture, new technology and materials with Skyline’s ability to utilize multiple techniques of eco-etch™, texture and AST™ (advanced screening technology) to pattern on glass. Ecoetch ™ is an innovative process used in the decoration of glass. The process achieves the look, feel and maintenance benefits of imported Acid Etch Glass without the environmental concerns of the process and the costly transportation. In line with an ethos of responsible sewardship, Skyline paints and coatings are all low-VOC; our colored paints are exclusively formulated water-based paints. Skyline glass is 100% recyclable. Skyline Design is the number one supplier of decorative glass in North America. Founded in 1982, Skyline has a reputation for innovative design collaboration with leading talent, offering the architecture and design community the most comprehensive portfolio of glass products anywhere. Skyline standard glass lines provide a broad range of designs with affordable flexibility. Lead time is kept to a minimum because all of the glass is manufactured in and shipped from Chicago.
