Precision Cutting for Delicate Materials: Our Success Story with Zünd America

Skyline Design has been a long-time user of Zünd’s digital cutting system, which enables our company to produce high-quality glass and film products.

Skyline Design’s LCG Smart Glass® turns transparent or opaque at the push of a button, thanks to the use of Gauzy Polymer-Dispersed Liquid-Crystal adhesive film. However, this film has a tendency to delaminate during the cutting process, requiring precision cuts to maintain the integrity of the product.

To overcome this challenge, Skyline Design turned to Zünd America for recommendations on the latest digital cutting solution that would be best suited for this special application. Through extensive testing at Zünd America’s Customer Experience Center, the Application Team identified the Zünd S3 L-1600 configuration, along with the specific cutting tools, methods, and parameters that would perfectly meet our production requirements. The upgraded Zünd S3 cutter has since been installed, and Skyline Design has taken full advantage of its expanded, on-demand manufacturing capabilities.

With the Zünd S3, Skyline Design can explore new materials and ways to further expand its product line and fabrication methods, including inner-layer materials that were previously cut or trimmed by hand. Skyline Design is also considering adding tools to make their own custom boxes to facilitate shipping smaller pieces and samples. As Vipul Bhagat, President of Skyline Design, says, “We cannot wait to benefit even more from the versatility and expandability of the Zünd S3.”
